The English coach Stuart Baxter has resigned his coaching duties from the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The 65-year-old coach left a big surprise at the press conference by announcing his cancer ahead of the South African final against Libya in the last qualifying round for the continental championship.
The South African coach explained that he had rejected the doctor's opinion at the time and that he was insisting on going to Tunisia to lead the boys against Libya. "I belong completely to this country but I told him that I had to travel with the team, my membership in South Africa is not in doubt."
"I decided to resign from my position and I have the opportunity to hire another team to coach this generation of players," Baxter said.
Stewart Baxter led South Africa to the quarterfinals of the Alcan competition after ousting Egypt from the knockout stages, before winning the tournament in Nigeria.
