Apple has acquired the majority of Intel 's $ 1 billion smart chip manufacturing unit and aims to get the iPhone to 5G, experts said. .
According to TNW's technical website, the agreement includes the transfer of approximately 2,200 Intel employees, as well as intellectual property, equipment and rents, which is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2019.
By combining existing and future wireless technology patents with Apple's current portfolio, Apple will retain more than 17 patents for wireless technology ranging from standard cellular protocols to modem architecture and operation.
Intel will retain the ability to develop modems for non-intelligent applications, such as computers and Internet devices for objects and independent vehicles. "This agreement allows us to focus on the technology development of the fifth generation network while preserving the important IP and modem technology developed by our team," said Bob Swan, CEO of Intel. "We look forward to deploying all our efforts at 5G, which are closely aligned with the needs of our global customer base, including network operators, telecom equipment manufacturers and cloud service providers.
We will not see the iPhone 5G based on Intel technology for a few years, but that means that Apple will have more control over its devices once the technology transfer is done.
The company still uses part of the Qualcomm modem, and the first iPhone 5G is likely to use the Qualcomm modem, but this new acquisition will facilitate its transition to technology.
