Al Ain (United Arab Emirates) – Qatar won its first match in a Doha country since the start of the Gulf diplomatic crisis, beating Lebanon 2-0 in the first round of the 2019 Asian Cup on Wednesday in Al Ain.
Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Manama, as well as Cairo, broke off ties with Doha in June 2017 over its recent accusation of supporting extremist groups, a charge refuted by Qatar.
Qatar are the top scorer in Group E with a 4-0 win over North Korea in Dubai on Tuesday.
Bbadam Al-Rawi scored on a free kick 65 and Al-Aziz Ali (79).
The Qatari public and media were completely absent from the stadiums of Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, but the honorary tribune was occupied by Qataris Saud Al Mohannadi, AFC Vice President and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, and by Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmed Al Thani, President of the Qatar Football Federation.
Qatari media said last week that Muhannadi had been banned from entering Abu Dhabi, where he was traveling from Muscat, which the organizers denied. (AFP)
