Canberra: Middle East

The Australian government is in talks with the United States to buy millions of barrels of oil to increase its reserves, the Australian government said on Wednesday. According to the latest government data for the month of May, Australian crude and refined oil reserves are sufficient for 28 days and diesel for only 22 days, but supplies have been supported by subsequent purchases. According to an IEA agreement, Member States must have 90-day fuel reserves.
Australian Energy Minister Angus Taylor said Monday that Australia was in talks with the United States to refuel to increase their reserves. "A contractual arrangement would improve our inventory and provide greater flexibility," Taylor said in a press release.
He said in statements on the radio, quoted by the German news agency, that the arrival of crude oil in Australia could take between 20 and 40 days. Stressing that the negotiations with the United States began some time ago.
The news of oil talks between the two parties comes at a time when Australia is considering sending naval components into the Gulf amid rising tensions in the region between the United States and Iran.
