Online calculator identifies women most likely to develop bad cancer
Scientists have developed a rigorous test to calculate a woman's risk of bad cancer at any stage of her life, calling it a "change of the rules of the game."
This breakthrough allows doctors to use an online tool to predict cancer risk in women several decades before the onset of symptoms.
Scientists at the University of Cambridge said the test, which combines a DNA or blood test, with a family history of cancer and with elementary health checks, is "the most complete approach", after being developed, to predict the risk of bad cancer.
The test, piloted by doctors, uses more than 300 genetic indicators, as well as information on weight, alcohol consumption and other medical information, especially on menopause in older women.
Although some of these factors have an individual impact on the likelihood of disease progression, their combination, including family history and genetics, has allowed scientists to identify the most vulnerable women.
All of this data was used to create an online calculator currently being tested by nurses, health workers and genetic counselors.
Scientists believe the project, funded by the UK Cancer Research Institute, can help at-risk women to adopt a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of cancer.
People at higher risk may also take tamoxifen, a hormone that reduces the risk of bad cancer.
