LONDON (Reuters) – Former international defender Sol Campbell has resigned by mutual agreement after eight months in command, the fourth-division club said on Thursday.
"The departure of the former players of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur has been held in a friendly manner and the transparency is total between the club and Seoul regarding the challenges facing lower level clubs such as Macclesfield Town," said the club in a statement.
"Macclesfield presented my first great experience in the world of coaching, as well as an education for which I am grateful," said Campbell on the club's official website.
"I want to thank all the players and the team for the support I received during my stay at the Moss Rose Stadium, as well as the loyal fans, who, through their faith, have played an important role in our success at the end of last season. "
Earlier, Campbell had criticized the lack of black-skinned coaches, Asians and ethnic minorities in English football, describing what was happening as a "sad accusation" of football.
Campbell took over at Moss Rose Stadium in November and managed to keep the team threatened with relegation at the bottom of the table, remaining in the fourth division after a 10-game series in which he lost only twice .
The Macclesfield players had threatened to boycott the last game of last season as a protest against the non-payment of their salaries, but they retracted after the club management asked them to pay their arrears for several months.
Six of his former players also lodged a complaint against the club to delay payment of their dues, which led the tax authorities to seize the file before the case was sent back to September 11th.
Campbell led his former team in their last appearance as coach against Blackpool on Tuesday in the League Cup. The match ended in a shootout win.
Macclesfield is currently eighth in the fourth division, after his initial loss to Exeter, with a 3-0 home win against Leyton Orient.
