Acne is one of the most common skin diseases and a new study found that one of its common medications causes an imbalance of bacteria in our skin.
Isotretinoin is often used to treat severe acne. But the drug has potential side effects, including depression and liver damage, and causes serious birth defects if consumed during pregnancy, according to a report by the author, Yala Huyings Martin, published by Medical News Today.
It should be noted that isotretinoin derived from vitamin A reduces the secretion of sebaceous glands in the skin and produced oils, which in turn reduces bacteria in oily skin and inflammation.
A study by researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and published in the journal Skin Investigations revealed that isotretinoin causes an imbalance of bacteria in the skin and suggests a new way to treat acne.
Beneficial bacteria
The study supervisor, Dr. William McCoy, said that there are greasy spots in the skin that promote the growth of certain groups of bacteria, some of which appear to be related to the onset of l & # 39; acne. For this reason, a team of researchers wanted to know if isotretinoin actually reduces these bacteria, especially probiotic bacteria.
The study was conducted on 17 people with acne, who had received treatment with isotretinoin. For the control group, it consisted of eight people, four of whom suffered from acne but did not receive any treatment, and four others did not suffer from acne. Later, the research team collected skin samples from each participant four times over a 10-month period.
Key results showed that treatment with isotretinoin had already reduced the number of probiotic bacteria, while the diversity of bacteria had increased on the surface of the skin.
"It's clear that this drug actually reduces acne-causing bacteria," said Dr. McCoy. Using the next generation of methadeam badyzes, the team also found that other types of bacteria are not badociated with acne treatment, which is increased when using isotretinoin.
Bacteria
According to the research team, the results showed that isotretinoin altered the growth of more diverse groups of bacteria, rather than controlling the number of bacteria in the skin. This continued even after the end of processing, as oil production returned to normal.
After treatment, the bacterial communities are transformed into a mixture of bacteriostatic species that appears to be more useful, and this process continues several months after the end of treatment, said McDonka Mitreva, medical badistant professor and co-author of l & # 39; study.
In fact, understanding how isotretinoin works is just the first step, as the team is currently working on a more comprehensive study in hopes of developing an acne treatment. "Our study suggests that there might be a way to provide a treatment containing bacteria that would help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria," McCoy said.
"Reducing the possible side effects badociated with isotretinoin will definitely be beneficial for people taking this medication, and it will be a special alternative treatment for pregnant women with severe acne," McCoy said.
He added that women often refrain from taking medication to get rid of acne during pregnancy because no safe treatment is available, so they need to Other options.
