Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that players who competed with their country at the World Cup may be missing from Chelsea's shock in the Community Shield and the opening of the Premier League against Arsenal.
Sixteen England champion players competed in the World Cup in Russia, including Englishman John Stones, Rahim Sterling, David Silva of Spain, Brazilians Ederson and Gabriel Jesus.
After the tournament last Sunday, most of the players did not join the team, Guardiola said that he would not rush.
The Spanish coach said: "That's what it looks like, we talked about what they should be prepared for when they come back … If they were tired or did not want to take part in the league and open league against Arsenal,
Guardiola spoke of disappointment after failing to join Giorgio after the player moved to Chelsea with a five-year contract.
He said: "I was disappointed (because of the failure to include it) .We tried but the players go where they want."
"I always advise every player to go where he wants."
City plays Chelsea (FA Cup champion) on August 5, in the Community Shield match, and then starts defending the league title a week later, when they arrive on Arsenal.
