Some of the dead planets emit radio waves well after their death, which can be spotted from the ground in hopes of hearing strange zombie sounds.
The planets, whose stars have turned them into nuclei, could form a circle with the star that destroyed them and create rare radio waves, according to a new study published in the Monthly Opinion of the Royal Astronomical Society.
When certain stars reach the end of their life, they can expand and burn all nearby planets, turning them into metal cores orbiting them, before they become white dwarfs.
The white dwarf and surrounding planets can form a circle and emit radio waves, where radiation from the circle can be captured by radio telescopes on Earth.
Scientists now plan to find these dead planets by discovering their zombie signals, which would be an exciting feat, because no one would discover a large planet or its nucleus simply by observing magnetic effects.
"We think our chances of making exciting discoveries are very good," said Dmitry Ferras, senior researcher at the University of Warwick.
Scientists need to know how long nuclei have survived after stripping their outer layers, although studies have shown that in a number of cases nuclei can survive for up to a billion years.
Therefore, future discoveries can give us more precise information about how our planet will unfold in the future.
