Agencies – Abu Dhabi The World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday that e-cigarettes and tobacco heaters do not help fight cancer, and urged smokers and governments not to trust statements cigarette manufacturers about their latest products.
"The seventh report of the World Health Organization on the worldwide tobacco epidemic states that prevention of industry interventions is essential to reduce the harm caused by tobacco use.
"The tobacco industry has a long history of organized, hostile, supported and adequately resourced opposition to tobacco control measures."
"Although there are declared and secretive strategies … they are all aimed at weakening tobacco control efforts," he said.
The industry has tried to gain respect through manipulative messages such as claims that its products fit into the "harm reduction" strategy, although cigarettes still account for 97% of the global tobacco market, said the report.
Vinayak Prasad, program officer of the WHO's Tobacco Control Unit, told reporters that the development of new products was aimed solely at expanding tobacco manufacturers' markets.
Electronic cigarettes, containing nicotine without tobacco, are encouraged as a way to stop smoking. But Prasad adds that there is no evidence to justify this claim, while evidence from the United States has shown that it has increased the prevalence of smoking among young people.
