With several options available, the diet is a desirable option for weight loss and is suitable for many health conditions. But a new study published in Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology has shown that soda consumption increases the risk of diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes in the eye.

This study is the first of its kind to evaluate the relationship between soft drinks and diabetic retinopathy, according to Webmd.

"Diabetics who consume about 1.5 liters of non-alcoholic beverages a week are at increased risk for diabetic retinopathy," said Eva Fenwick, a researcher at the Singapore Eye Research Institute and badistant professor at the University of California. Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. .

The study did not reach the same conclusion in patients taking regular non-alcoholic beverages. The study included 609 people, on average 64 years old, including 73 with type 1 diabetes, 510 with type 2 diabetes and 26 with diabetes without any knowledge in an ophthalmic hospital between 2009-2010.

In the past, dietary drinks were considered healthier than regular beverages, but research is increasingly focused on artificial sweeteners. Previous research has linked diet in soda to diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
