The Ebola virus has been found in one of the country's bats, researchers at the Liberia Ministry of Health said.
After sampling hundreds of bats in the last two weeks, scientists from the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Public Health of Liberia have discovered the presence of the virus in one of the bats, according to the director general of the Institute of Journalists, Tolbert Nissoa, in Monrovia.
"Until now, test results on all other bats have been negative," he said, adding however that the results are important because the researchers believe that they indicate that bats could be a natural incubator for the Ebola virus.
He added that researchers believe that bats from other parts of Africa are also carriers of the Ebola virus.
"Current studies will examine whether more bats are infected and how they are transmitted to the virus," he said. Ebola, an extremely contagious disease that causes fever, often causes severe internal bleeding and death.
