The planet, called GJ 357 d, orbits a star about 31 light-years away in a so-called habitable area, a region far from its star so as not to be too hot but close enough to not get too cold.
The new planet
It may also contain liquid water, but further research is needed to determine if the atmosphere of the GJ 357 j is sufficiently dense and warm to accommodate liquid water.
The discovery comes just days after the discovery of three new planets in the star system, 73 light years from Earth.
"The GJ 357d is located outside of the habitable star region, where it receives the same amount of starry energy from its star as Mars receives from the sun," said Diana Kosakovsky of the l '. Institute of Astronomy Max Planck Heidelberg.
The 357 day GJ is in orbit every 55.7 days at about 20% of the distance from Earth to the Sun.
