Sharjah 24 / AFP:

The sharp rise in obesity-related cancers among young adults in the United States could end the decline in the number of cancer deaths, researchers said Monday.

A large study of two-thirds of the US population found that about six cancers, one of the most common causes of obesity, had increased between 1995 and 2015 in men and women under 50 years old.

The lower the age group, the greater the risk of developing these cancers, according to the British medical journal The Lancet.

During the study period, for example, the incidence of pancreatic cancer increased by 1% per year in adults aged 45 to 49 years.

In the age group 30-34 years, the infection rate increased by more than 2%, and among 25-29 year olds, the increase exceeded 4% "4.4%".

The increase was more severe in the 25-29 age group in four other obesity-related cancers, with an annual increase in incidence: kidney cancer (6.23%), vesicle biliary (3.71), uterine (3.35%) and colon (2) 41%.

A summary of the report highlights a recent change that could indicate a possible increase in obesity-related cancers in adult adults, said Ahmed El-Din Gamal, co-author of the study of the American Society of Cancer.

The prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in the United States over the last four decades.

Other rich countries, and recently developing countries, have also increased and today, about 2 billion people are obese or overweight, with a few exceptions, cancer is a disease badociated with aging.

It is true that the increase was more severe in older age groups, but new cases are more common among the youngest, according to the researchers.

Between 2010 and 2014, two cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed in 100,000 people between 24 and 49 years of age, compared with 37 cases in 100,000 people aged 50 to 84, but the total number of cancer deaths in the United States United has decreased.

Between 1980 and 2014, about 20 million people died of cancer and the number of deaths from the disease decreased by 20%, from 240 to 192 per 100,000 population, mainly because of the decline in tobacco use. but obesity could soon reverse this equation, he warned. Beauty.

He added that obesity is now one of the most preventable causes of cancer prevention in the United States and Britain, one in 12 in the United States being caused by being overweight, versus more one in 20 in Britain.

Based on previous research on the link between obesity and the prevalence of colon cancer in young adults, Gamal and colleagues badyzed all cancers between 1995 and 2015 in 25 states in the United States, where 67% lived of the American population. The data included 30 types of cancer, 12 of which related to obesity.

"Researchers believe that their findings are partly due to the obesity epidemic, which is both provocative and credible," wrote Catherine Marinak of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brenda Berman from Harvard University at The Lancet.

The researchers called on doctors to redouble efforts in the fight against obesity, stressing the need to warn the patient of the increased risk of cancer due to being overweight.

In the United States, less than half of primary care physicians currently measure their body mbad index regularly.

The quality of diets has declined in the United States in recent decades, said Huna Sung of the American Society of Cancer, the main badet of the research.

More than half of Americans between the ages of 20 and 49 consume an insufficient portion of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and consume salt, fast food and sugary drinks, she said.
