The next edition of the World Cup has increased the number of women's teams from 24 to 32 from the next edition in 2023 to "promote the development of women's football".
"The resounding success of this year's World Cup has clearly shown that it is time to build on this momentum and take concrete steps to promote women's football," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino . The FIFA Council unanimously approved a proposal to increase the number of teams after taking its decision at its next meeting on 23 and 24 October in Shanghai.
On July 5, two days before the finals final of the Women's World Cup in France, Infantino proposed a five-point plan to support the expansion of women's football. One of those five points is the increase in the number of women participating in the World Cup from 24 to 32 from 2023, as was done at the World Cup, men's 32 to 48 elected from 2026.
"Time must not be lost," said Infantino. Nothing is impossible. If we look at the success of this World Cup, we should see a bigger tournament. Nine candidates are competing for the 2023 World Cup: Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Japan, South Africa and South Korea, possibly with a joint organization with North Korea and New Zealand.
