Former Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan has announced his retirement for 40 years because of his inability to play.

"I decided to stop playing professional football," said the former player at Atletico Madrid and Manchester United during a televised interview.

"I was suggested to keep playing, I apologized, but I'm no longer competitive and it's a bit difficult," said the player, who ended his career in Kitche in Hong Kong and announced his international retirement in 2015.

Forlan scored 36 goals out of 112 internationals, the team's third-leading scorer after Swede Luis Suarez (58 goals) and Edinson Cavani, top scorer at Paris Saint-Germain (48).

Forlan has been named World Player of the Year 2010 in South Africa. He also scored five goals for Germany's Thomas Mueller, Wesley Sneijder and David Villa. These goals allowed Uruguay to reach the semi-finals.

He also participated in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea, Japan and 2014 in Brazil, and also won the Copa America in 2011.

His last international match was the final of the Brazilian World Cup when Uruguay sank 2-0 against Colombia.

Forlan traveled to the top European clubs, playing Manchester United (win in 2003), Villarreal and Atletico Madrid (winner of the Europa League in 2010), and at Inter.

In recent years, he has worn the colors of Brazilian Internacional, Japanese Cerezo Osaka, Pinarol, the Indian city of Mumbai and finally Kitche.
