Nikita Mazin activated the wet ring during the double turn in the first seconds of the session, before stopping and immediately lifting the red flag.

Giotto, the Art of Fries driver and Fiertozzi Racing, later piloted his own world, advancing more than two seconds on his first attempt, while exploring the wetlands.

But after stopping De Fries 13 minutes from the end, Nicolas Latvie is leading the ranking for Damascus, 0.242 seconds ahead of De Fries.

The pilots took even less than five minutes to improve their situation of crisis: after leaving the maintenance station, De Fries was the fastest ahead 0.769 in front of Latvie.

Giotto, however, gave a rocket-propelled grenade after being stopped to reach a distance of 0.227 seconds behind De Fries, finishing second.

Mick Schumacher was close to his best results in the Formula 2 qualifiers, but slipped when Giotto improved his time at the last minute to put the fourth box on the starting line.

Carlin's driver, Luiz Delitraz, was one of those who had improved their crisis belatedly as he was heading towards the Calum Eliot Ferrari.

Seventh place went to Jack Aitken in his last attempt, ahead of Honda's Nobuharu Matsushita.

Antoine Hubert and Guan Yu Zhou Akmala were among the top ten.
