Zidane left Real Madrid on May 31, just five days after winning the Champions League title, leaving Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo a few months later.
Calderon, who has been president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, said the reason for Zidane's departure was directly linked to Ronaldo and his former teammate Welsh Gareth Bell.
"Zidane was very clear when he left the club, he insisted on keeping Cristiano and selling Bell, and the president (the current president) wanted to do exactly the opposite," Calderon said.
"Zidane also wanted to contract with players and sell others, but did not get what he wanted and decided to leave, he was right to do it."
Real Madrid are having a difficult season after the departure of Zidane and Ronaldo. Bell and his team can not fill the gap left by the club's top scorer before the European champions slip into fifth place in the Primera Liga.
Calderon was president of Real Madrid for three years between 2006 and 2009, between two terms from 2000 to date.
