WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Scientists from the United States and Spain have found that people who sleep less than six hours a day are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those who sleep seven to eight hours a day.
According to the EurekAlert website, the study included 3974 Spanish citizens, worn during the "Actigraph" trial period, which measures the duration of sleep and alertness, citing the "Arabic" site.
Participants were divided into four groups based on their night hours. They also underwent echocardiography and computed tomography to diagnose diseases.
The results showed that those who slept less than six hours were 27% more likely to develop atherosclerosis than those who slept between 7 and 8 hours. In addition, the risk of cardiovascular disease increased by 34% due to lack of sleep and nocturnal awakening.
Sleeping more than 8 hours a day can help develop atherosclerosis.
British researchers have stated that the continuous lack of sleep has serious effects on the internal functions of the human body.
One study found that the activity of hundreds of genes stopped with less than six hours of sleep per night.
The results of this study could help understand the damage caused by sleep deprivation to human health. Heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and brain function are all diseases badociated with sleep disorders, have said the researchers in the official journal of the National Academy of Sciences.
