LONDON – Our smartphones are now part of our identity. Many of us spend more than five hours a day using these devices. What do smart phones reveal about our personality?
A group of researchers from the University of Lincoln and Lancaster studied 500 iPhone users and Android phones and their attitude towards the device used.
The researchers discovered that our choice of smart phone revealed some characteristics of our characters, especially that Android users were more loyal than iPhone users.
But iPhone users tend to be younger, more open than other users using Android devices.
Women, it seems, use the iPhone more than any other device.
The study found that women were twice as likely as men to own the iPhone, but the researchers did not explain why.
However, Android users tend to be older men.
But why does our choice of a smart device reveal the characteristics of our characters?
IPhone and Android phones represent about 90% of the world's smartphones and Google is the world's most popular smartphone system by 2018, covering 88% of the global market.
Apple, says AOS, occupies the second position with 12% of world markets.
This option allows the buyer of the device to express it.
"It has become increasingly clear that smart phones have become a miniaturized digital version of the same user," said Heather Shaw, co-author of the study.
"Many of us do not like some people who are trying to use their phones because they reveal a lot about us," she says.
The study found that iPhone enthusiasts are not the most willing to live with Android users.
But have found that iPhone users are paying increasing attention to the perception that others have of their devices, as a sign of their status.
They tend to show more emotions than others.
The researchers went further in their study by designing a computer program – based on their findings – to predict the type of phone a client owns.
"We can build a statistical model that, after some personal questions to testers, can predict the type of phone in their pockets with a sincerity of 70%," said researcher David Ellis in an interview with CNN.
In their study, Ellis and his colleagues conclude that personality traits can be detected "with the help of simple things, such as choosing the operating system of your smartphone." – (BBC)
