DUBAI (Reuters) – Jordan dropped out of the Asian Cup after losing 4-3 on penalties against Vietnam after a 1-1 draw after an overtime Sunday at Maktoum Stadium in Dubai.
Bahaa Abdurrahman gave Jordan the lead after 39 minutes into the match, striking the ball from an indirect free kick just outside the penalty area. Nguyen Kong Vong equalized for Vietnam in the second half of the second period.
PT Dong scored the decisive penalty for Vietnam after substitutes Baha Faisal and Ahmed Samir Saleh missed their offer.
Jordan made four changes in the game, including three in overtime, during the first application of a new rule allowing a fourth change when extra time was taken in the playoffs.
Vietnam will meet in the quarter-finals with Saudi Arabia or Japan next Thursday in Dubai.
