(Reuters) – Stade Rance strengthened its bid for a UEFA Champions League spot with a 2-1 win over Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Saturday, the best way to commemorate the club alongside its late star Raymond Copa.

In a new week with few Ligue 1 matches, Saturday was the only one of the four that the police had to hold after the postponement of some matches due to protests that affected the league's second-round program.

In Rance, Saturday came to commemorate Cuba, whose statue was unveiled before the meeting.

Cuba is a great striker who played for the team during the first edition of the European Cup final in 1956, after his defeat against Real Madrid.

Cuba, who has spent two episodes with Rance, has won the title three times with Madrid, the last in 1959, when he was beating his old club again in the final.

The star of French football, the first of 85 years of his country, died last year.

After the celebration, Moussa Dombia and Matthieu Cavarro, the two scorers of the 11th and 8th points, were tied on points with Nice and one point from Olympique Marseille and Saint-Etienne.

Domia gave the hosts the lead after seven minutes and despite Adrian Thomason's goals for Strasbourg, Cavaro took the advantage 17 minutes later with a superb free kick.

Both teams are seeking a place in the European Championships, with the Rans seeking to return to continental competition for the first time since 1963.
