Liverpool won the European Football Super Cup by beating compatriot Chelsea 5 to 4 on penalties after scoring 1 to 1 in the original time and 2 to 2 in overtime in Istanbul.
Chelsea opened the scoring with French striker Olivier Giroud (36) before Liverpool was tied early in the second half by Senegal's Sadio Mane.
It was the first time this match between two English teams after Liverpool's win in the Champions League last season and Chelsea, European Champion (Europa League).
