Real Madrid midfielder Luca Modric won the Croatian Footballer of the Year award for the first time in his career. "It's a great honor to be the best of this competition," said Modric at the ceremony in Zagreb.

Sandra Berkovic, the disc jockey, won the best sport award in Croatia. It's the seventh time that Berkovic, the winner of two Olympic medals, has been awarded the Best Athlete Award in Croatia by the Association of Athletics Critics.

Modric has dominated most of the world awards this year, winning the FIFA World Player of the Year award and the FIFA World Football Player Trophy to end the dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Modric also won the world player title of the year in September, beating Ronaldo. The 34-year-old played a crucial role in qualifying for the Champions League for the third time in a row. He won the title of world player of the year after leading Croatia to the final before losing to France.
