Nadal and Federer return to the WTA Council

The Spanish Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have returned to the WTA players' table, the first confirmed on the sidelines of the Canadian Games in Montreal. Nadal and Federer, along with Austrian Jurgen Melzer, were elected to the council, chaired by world number one Novak Djokovic, to replace Robin Haas, Jimmy Murray and Sergey Stakhovsky, who resigned on the eve of the start of Wimbledon in June.

"We decided to be together," Nadal said at a press conference after reaching the quarterfinals in Montreal. "We are here to help and be aware of what is happening, and last year we had a lot of ups and downs in various areas."

Djokovic has long been trying to change the way male tennis works and restructure governance so that ATP does not control all misplaced.

"Djokovic has been around for a while, but we were here before him, so it's good that players are interested in their sport," added Nadal.

The goal of Djokovic is to give players more power to redistribute prizes and reduce the impact of tournaments, especially the 1,000-point tournament.

But the Serb is sometimes clumsy, the latest victim being the president of the British Professional Players Association, Chris Kermod, who was forced to leave at the end of 2019 after a vote of the council of players in March, when his three representatives voted against him.

Nadal spoke of "intense discussions within the board shortly before and that there is a lot to do". "I'm here to help," he said, "I'll give my opinion as a player who has spent more than 15 years and I can make different suggestions on how change could happen."

"Throughout our career, Roger Federer and I have followed closely the evolution of our game. There is a lot to do and we want to be part of it, that's why we're back."
