Defending champion Rafael Nadal maintained his momentum in Canada and easily defeated Guido Pia 6-3 6-4 of Argentina to advance to the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup on Thursday.
Nadal, who won his fourth title last year, resisted the wind and broke Villa four times before winning.
In the first tournament since losing to Roger Federer in the semifinal at Wimbledon last month, the 33-year-old Spaniard had a much easier confrontation than his victory over Britain's Daniel Evans in his first match, Wednesday, when he overcame a late break.
Nadal plays seventh seed Fabio Funini, who beat Frenchman Adrian Manarino 6-2, 7-5.
"He plays very well," Nadal said of Fonini after defeating Federer to win 379 Masters wins.
"I watched part of his game yesterday. Deliver an excellent performance. (Funini) enjoys a wonderful season and is one of the best seasons of his career, if it is not the best. "

Earlier, Dominic Tim, seeded second, beat Croatian Marin Cilic 7-6 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.
Tim, who has never won a game in five attempts in Canada before this week, battled No. 14 seed Cilic while sparing his nine chances to break his serve and relying on successful ground strikes.
Tim will play eighth-seeded Daniel Medvedev of Russia, who beat Chilean Christian Garin 6-3, 6-3.
Karen Khchanov also qualified for the quarter-finals with a 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Canadian Felix Oger-Alyasim, who turned 19 years old.
The German, third seed, Alexander Zverev, will play against Khchanov after defeating Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5, 5-7, 7-6.
Spanish Roberto Bautista qualified with a 7-5 win over 7-5 over Richard Gasquet while France's Gael Monfils beat Hubert Horcach 6-4 6-0.
