A new prostate cancer drug can give hope to thousands of men with an incurable form of the disease after a successful clinical trial.

Lynparza has achieved its ultimate goal of extending the lives of men with cancer, and developers say it's the only treatment that has responded to the "urgent need for new effective treatments".

Lynparza destroys and kills damaged cancer cell DNA and has already been approved worldwide for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

The AstraZeneca company, based in Cambridge, revealed that its experience was going well and that it would provide all the results in the near future.

Lynparza has been compared to two testosterone blocking drugs: abiraterone and enzalutamide, which work by lowering the "male hormone".

The drug works differently by targeting the damaged DNA to kill tumors and is intended for patients whose cancer has continued to grow and spread even when testosterone levels are medically low. This disease is called metastatic prostate cancer (mcrpc), which does not respond to other treatments and kills a lot.

AstraZeneca manages the PROfound experiment, in collaboration with the US pharmaceutical group MSD, known in the United States as Merck.

Society looks forward to discussing the results with global health authorities.
