In a statement rarely published by one of the world's biggest football stars over the past decade, Cristiano Ronaldo has been making fun of the exploits of his traditional rival, Lionel Messi.
In an interview with television channel "Dazen", Juventus star Ronaldo spoke of the constant comparison with Barcelona captain Messi, after years in which both players dominated the individual awards.
Ronaldo, 34, believes that he still has an advantage over Messi, 32, because of his Champions League record, which the Portuguese have achieved 5 times to 4 times only for Argentina.
"The difference between Messi and me is that I won the Champions League with different teams," he said, citing his continental title in 2008 with Manchester United, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 with Real Madrid.
"I've been the top scorer in the Champions League six times in a row, many players have won the title five times, and I'm going to this tournament."
"Messi is an excellent player, not only in memory of the Golden Ball, but also to keep him on top every year, like me."
Messi has never played for any other team than Barcelona, having won the Champions League in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015.He has, like Ronaldo, five gold balls.
