LONDON (Reuters) – British scientists are adjusting their genetically modified chickens to fight the flu, hoping to prevent a deadly human pandemic.
According to press reports, Wendy Barclay, professor of virology at Imperial College London, said the first generation of modified chickens was due to hatch later this year.
The DNA of birds has been modified with the help of a new gene modification technique called Cresper, which involves removing some of the protein on which the flu virus normally depends, making it the chicken is totally resistant to the flu.
Barkley said the goal was to produce poultry that could not be infected with the flu and that would be a barrier between wild birds and humans.
The spread of a human influenza pandemic is one of the biggest threats for scientists and health professionals in the world.
The greatest fear of a deadly strain of bird flu spreading from wild birds to humans, through poultry, spreads before it turns into an airborne epidemic that can easily be pbaded between humans .
