NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Exercise plays an important role in preventing Alzheimer's by stimulating the body to produce a hormone that improves memory and keeps the brain healthy, a recent US study finds.
The study was conducted by researchers from the Faculty of Medicine at Columbia University and was published in the latest issue of Nature Medicine.
Highlights of the study
- The researchers said that athletes know that intense exercise can stimulate the body to release a torrent of endorphins, which helps relieve pain, provides a sense of comfort and improvement, and is a good hormone to promote mood.
- Physical activity is known to improve memory, and studies suggest that it could also reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease, but researchers do not understand why.
- As part of this study, the team discovered for the first time a link between a hormone called erysin-irisin, which increases significantly during exercise, and between the prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
- The researchers found that the secretion of this hormone greatly protects the brain forceps and memory in the hippocampus and improves brain health.
- After badyzing tissue samples from human brain libraries, the researchers also found that hormone levels in the cerebral hippocampus were decreasing in people with Alzheimer 's disease.
