A Canadian study found that women are stronger than men in many characteristics, including their ability to tolerate pain. Men are more subject to stress and sensitivity when they are facing pain, especially if they have already suffered before.

The study, conducted by McGill University, found that women could cope better with pain than men because men and women remembered their past pain differently.

Scientists said the discovery surprised them when women had forgotten their pain when men did not forget it. Thus, when it comes to bearing the same pain again, men are more stressed and more sensitive to this pain than women.

Volunteers participated in two trials in which 41 men and 38 women were exposed to low intensity pain in the form of arm warmth. Immediately afterwards, they were subjected to a more painful experience after knotting the rope firmly in their arms after performing 20 minutes of arm exercises.

Only 7 out of 80 volunteers rated their experience as less than 50 points on a 100 point pain scale. When pain experiences were repeated in both men and women, men rated their pain more strongly than the second time and higher than women in the badessment of pain.

In order to test the effect of memory factors on the degree of pain, scientists repeated the same experiments the next day. Scientists found that men's pain was greater than yesterday's and higher than women's.

Scientists hope their findings will pave the way for new treatments for chronic pain.
