Researchers used questionnaires and interviews that adopted standardized questions to identify symptoms of anxiety and depression in the last third of pregnancy.

The questionnaires also examined the nature of the couple's relationship as well as the emotions and behavior of the children. They found that newborns whose parents were anxious and stressed during pregnancy tended to manifest more boredom and anger, anxiety, sadness and tears than their normal parents.

According to the study staff, it reveals the unique impact of mental health issues during pregnancy and their consequences for children.

Professor Clare Hughes, who led the study, said her findings underscore the need for early and more effective support for couples to better prepare them for a smooth transition to the world of fatherhood .
