(Reuters) – Manchester City beat West Ham United 5-0 at home to Premier League rivals Raheem Sterling on Saturday, with Burnley and Brighton & Hove Albion winning impressive wins.

After opening the tournament with a 4-1 win over Norwich City's newcomers to Anfield on Friday, the team's champion Pep Guardiola reacted strongly.

Brazilian Gabriel Jesus, who took the lead over Sergio Aguero, opened the scoring in the 25th minute and gave Sterling a 2-0 lead with a confident touchdown after a Kevin De Bruyne pbad.

Jesus became the first player in the Premier League to have his goal canceled by the video badistant referee when he converted Sterling's pbad into the goal in the 53rd minute.

The video, in his first appearance in the Premier League, confirmed Sterling's second goal. The referee intervened again six minutes before the end to take the penalty from Aguero, missing after Declan Rice came into the box.

The referee Mike Dean has decided to give Argentina another kick and Argentine has completed his hat trick in the stops.

Brighton, who had barely avoided relegation last season, made a perfect start for new coach Graham Potter with a 3-0 win at Watford.

Abdellah Doukouri opened the scoring when Pascal Grosse's pbad was cashed by mistake. Forwards Florin Andoni and Niall Mobay added goals after the break.

Ashley Barnes scored twice to lead Burnley to a 3-0 win over Southampton against Luxury Moore in a two-team encounter last season.

Icelandic winger Johan Gudmundsson added the third goal during a bad day for Ralph Hazenhotel.

Billy Sharp played to give Sheffield United a return to the top for the first time since 2007 with a 1-1 draw at home against Bournemouth.

Chris Mivam took the lead in the 62nd minute, but Sharp, 33, tied his goal for the first time in his first flight just two minutes from time.

Everton's investment over the summer boosted the team's hopes of playing in the top six, but it was a scoreless draw against Crystal Palace despite many missed opportunities.

Everton finished with 10 men after Morgan Schneiderlin was ejected 14 minutes from time.

Tottenham Hotspur will play against Aston Villa later on Saturday.
