Tony Morrison, the first black American writer to win the Nobel Prize for literature, died at the age of 88 after a short illness, her family said in a statement on Tuesday. "Tonight, Morrison died yesterday surrounded by family members and friends," the statement said.
"It is true that her departure is a huge loss, but we are grateful that she has lived a beautiful and long life," said her family.
The statement also pointed out that the Pulitzer Prize winning author had died as a result of a short illness, without explaining what it consisted of.
Morrison, descendant of a family of slaves, is known for his contribution to the promotion of black literature. This masterful academy has written 11 novels in six decades, as well as literary endeavors, children's stories, two plays and an operatic scenario.
She has reviewed the history of black Americans, from slavery to emancipation through slavery in contemporary American society.
