The exploratory committee to find an alternative to Reinhard Gridenl has proposed to appoint Fritz Keller, president of the Freiburg club, the new president of the German Football Association.
The German federation announced Thursday that Keller, 62, would be introduced to regional badociations and to the Bundesliga for questioning at a meeting in Berlin on August 21.
He will then have to confirm his position at the German General Assembly to be held in Frankfurt on 27 September.
"There is no doubt that Fritz Keller is an exceptional character," said Rainer Koch, one of the acting presidents of the EU.
He added: "The decades-long experience, which has close relations with professional and amateur football, as well as women's football and youth, and his career make him the most prominent candidate."
Grindel resigned from the German presidency in April after admitting to having received a 6,000 euro (6,700 euro) wristwatch from the former president of the Ukrainian federation.
Reinhard Raubül and Rainer Koch were temporarily president of the federation and were also part of the committee which examined the permanent candidates for this post.
"With a vision of the DFB's upcoming big challenges, Fritz Keller is the ideal candidate to lead the world's largest sports system in the future," said Raupol.
