The Syrian Science Olympiad team is participating in the World School Debating Championship, which kicked off yesterday in Thailand with teams from 64 countries.

The Syrian team participating in the tournament, which runs until August 2, includes Yasmin Hatem, Karla Aramosh, Ibrahim Al-Qbadir, Nia Kayali and Yara Ghanem.

The Commission of Excellence and Creativity organized a preparatory camp in Damascus last May, which included training and interactive sessions aimed at developing basic scientific skills and dialogue as well as discussions in English for members of the team in international debates.

In March, the Commission of Excellence and Creativity and the Syrian Secretariat for Development organized the second national championship of school debates for high school students from different governorates, who were chosen to represent Syria at the world championship.

The debates are based on the principle of competition between two teams in each debate, one of them supporting the subject of the discussion and refusing to the other the same subject, regardless of the personal opinion of the candidates.

Each debate consists of three speeches, each speaker delivering a four-minute speech, and each party presents a three-minute response letter, the final word from the support group. SANA
