The Swiss club Zurich has condemned supporters who threw bananas at Aldo Calo, the player of the Basel local team, at a corner of the home football match Sunday.
The club said in a statement: "In the first minutes of Basel's game, bananas were thrown supporters from Zurich to Basel, Aldo Calolo when setting up a corner. The club strongly condemns racist behavior and does not tolerate it at all.
"The Zurich club is always attached to pluralism and welcomes all people regardless of their origin or religion."
Local media also reported that the audience also spotlighted Kaloulo, a Rwandan-born Frenchman, at a corner in the ninth minute of Basel's 2-0 win. Calo had joined Basel in June after leaving the Olympique de Lyon.
The Swiss Football Federation has not yet commented on the incident.
