MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Alexander Zverev on Tuesday beat Elias Biden 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the Australian Open, strengthening his status as a title contender.

The fourth seed lost the tournament in the middle of the first set, which seems to have brought him back to the competition.

Zverev won the next eight games and Biden could not recover.

Zverev will play in the second round against the winner of the French match between Jeremy Scharde and Ojo Ombre.

The name of Zverev has become the leader of the new generation of men's tennis, a position he confirmed at the end of last year when he won his first title in the final of the men's tennis championship by defeating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic two days in a row.
