Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James can really do it all. Over the course of his career, James lived up to the immense hype that was brought to him in high school, won a championship in Cleveland, and founded a school. But perhaps his biggest achievement came on Saturday, as James proved he can get fans to come see a terrible movie.
“Space Jam: A New Legacy” topped “Black Widow” at the box office, grossing $ 32 million in its opening weekend, according to Deadline. James was pretty happy with that, tweeting a link to the Deadline story with the message “Hey haters”.
It was the best opening weekend of a Warner Bros. movie. during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Space Jam: A New Legacy” topped “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which grossed $ 28.2 million in its opening weekend.
“Space Jam: A New Legacy” Didn’t Receive Good Reviews
As fans flocked to see James on the big screen, critics had a much harsher reaction to the film. “Space Jam: A New Legacy” has a 31 on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has a 36 on Metacritic.
These numbers are not everything. If you were expecting the sequel to “Space Jam” to be “The Godfather,” we don’t know what to tell you.
The first “Space Jam” movie, which starred Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan, wasn’t rated well either, but older millennials are always going to fight for this movie.
Perhaps James’s version will have a similar following with young fans.
