Lee Mason: Sheffield United referee withdrawn against Liverpool after Brighton dispute

What happened?

Dunk described Mason’s decision to rule out his goal at West Brom as “horrible” and claimed the referee lost control of the game as Brighton lost on Saturday.

In the 28th minute at the Hawthorns, Alexis Mac Allister suffered a foul on the edge of the box from West Brom. While Dunk lined up the free kick, Mason whistled. West Brom goalkeeper Johnstone was not yet finished staring at his wall and was standing on his right post when Dunk placed the free kick into the empty side of the goal.

Mason whistled a second time after Dunk took the free kick, and the two groups of players immediately surrounded the referee to argue their case.

At first, the goal was denied, before Mason seemed to change his mind. He was then tasked with using the field-side monitor and, after consulting with VAR, Simon Hooper, Mason overturned the decision to award the goal to Brighton.

Mason suffered a muscle injury later in the game which saw him excluded from the Premier League game between Sheffield United and Liverpool on Sunday.

What was the reaction?

Dunk told Sky Sports: “It’s embarrassing, it’s a horrible decision, I said to the referee ‘can I take it?’ he hissed and I took him.

“Why doesn’t he come and talk to the press like me?” They never hide behind their bubble.

“I don’t think he knew what he was doing. He gave the goal, why did he give it? I don’t know why VAR got involved, he said “objective” … you can watch the video if you want.

When asked if Mason had lost control of the game, Dunk replied, “Yes, he did. Made.”

Has Mason already been criticized?

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo had previously been fined £ 25,000 for saying Mason was not good enough to be in the Premier League in December.
