Leaked documents show that the National Rifle Association has accumulated millions of dollars in legal bills over the last year.
The documents include a note written by the former group chairman, Oliver North, and the head of the ANR, Richard Childress, addressed to the legal counsel and the chairman of the audit committee of the company. ANR, who warned against high legal fees, posing "an existential threat to the financial stability of the ANR".
"Brewer's bills are draining NRA funds at a bewildering rate," North and Childress said in the memo that the Daily Beast had been authenticated. "It's a tax emergency."
Lawyer Bill Brewer represents the ANR and defended his fees in April. "We are a leading law firm, we make no hesitation about it," he told the Wall Street Journal.
The memo, dated April 18, 2019, a week before North was ousted from his leadership position after clashing with his CEO, Wayne LaPierre, said Mr. Brewer had charged the NRA with more than 24 million since his appointment to last year's position. Part of this amount was covered by a settlement against an insurance company, although the NRA still bears more than $ 18 million.
North and Childress said the NRA pays about $ 100,000 in legal fees a day.

The two men said they had asked for an external audit of the fees, but LaPierre refused.
NRA officials rejected the charges and suggested that people with personal goals pushed him.
