Senators from the Spartanburg County Legislative Delegation were divided in favor of tax breaks to get the Carolina Panthers to move their training grounds and the headquarters of their teams from North Carolina to South Carolina .
The Senate voted Thursday 27-15 to allow the Panthers to be exempted from paying state income tax, offering the organization $ 120 million in tax breaks. . Republican Senators Shane Martin, Scott Talley and Tom Corbin were among those who voted against the tax cuts, while Democrat Senator Glenn Reese and Senate Speaker Harvey Peeler, a Republican, voted in favor of the incentives.
Martin said he thought that the expected economic development impact of moving the Charlotte Panthers' facilities to the Rock Hill area had been inflated in the light of expert testimony. In the end, Martin said that questions were being asked about the move.
Talley has questioned Panthers ownership and involvement in South Carolina. Talley said he believed that the former Panthers owner, Jerry Richardson, had made sincere efforts to make his team truly representative of the two Carolinas.
"The owner said that if we did not grant him tax relief, he would stay in North Carolina," Talley said.
Reese said this measure would help boost the region's economy.
"It's going to be really positive and bring what the state needs in terms of economic development," said Reese.
Peeler said he agreed that if the Panthers decided to move their facilities to York County, this could help boost growth. He said that he had met the owners of the Panthers and that he believed that this had been done in South Carolina.
"Economic development will be very unique to York County and the state," Peeler said.
Wofford College has been hosting the Panthers' summer training camp for 24 years. The team's contract to organize the camp in Spartanburg continues this year.
