Lenovo Smart Clock vs. Amazon Echo Spot: Which One Should You Buy?

Amazon was one of the leaders when it came to installing smart screens at everyone's home. The company has been doing this for a while, but now there is competition from a multitude of companies, including Lenovo. The new Lenovo Smart Clock offers all the benefits of Google Assistant and some other tips without the ubiquitous camera.

Does a bigger screen mean it's better?

The first thing you will notice when comparing the Lenovo Smart Clock and Amazon Echo Spot is the disparity of the display size. Lenovo included a 4-inch screen, while the Echo Spot was only 2.5 inches. Obviously, the smart screen has more screens on the screen, allowing you to see all the information. However, Echo Spot has some additional benefits other than Alexa support.

In addition to having a larger screen, the Smart Clock comes with a 3W speaker with a "peak power" of 6W. This is combined with 2 passive radiators that, according to Lenovo, have enough power to "fill the room" with music or any other media you want to play.

In comparison, the 2W speaker of the Echo Spot measures 1.4 inches. This will do the job if you just want to hear the weather for the day while you are about to start yours. We certainly do not recommend using it to play any type of music for long periods. BUT, a 3.5mm headphone jack lets you connect it to a larger speaker if you want to have an extra cable.

Unfortunately, with Lenovo's smart clock, what you see is what you get because there is no 3.5mm headphone jack. However, the company has included a standard USB-A port on the back, which allows you to connect your smartphone, while Echo Spot does not include the USB port. This will not provide a fast charge, let alone something like Quick Charge 2.0, but it will still charge your phone all night in case you do not find your usual charging brick.

Both speakers include hardware volume controls so you can get the right volume. You can also press the mute button if you do not want to hear anything from your smart speakers for a while.

Assistant vs Alexa

Apart from price and design, the biggest difference between the Smart Clock and the Echo Spot lies in the brain of the operation. The smart clock Lenovo pulls its intelligence from Google with Wizard and Echo Spot, while Alexa from Amazon powers this speaker.

This is not necessarily a battle between Amazon and Google, but choosing the "best" depends on the products already present in your home. For example, with the smart clock, you can ask the wizard to play content on your TV with a connected Chromecast. Plus, this is compatible with Google routines. You can configure them on your phone and use your smart clock to activate the routines.

When it comes to Echo Spot, you get everything that Alexa has to offer, as well as millions of Alexa skills created over the years. These skills enable you to connect and integrate with a myriad of intelligent products, applications, etc.

The privacy of the room

Another consideration is whether you want a camera in your room or not. Putting a camera in a baby's room is one thing, but having a camera in your bedroom controlled by an offsite business can be embarrassing.

If you really want Echo Spot because you are well rooted in Amazon's ecosystem, but you do not want the camera, the solution is simple: put a piece of tape on the camera. Camera. With the smart clock, nothing worries, because Lenovo has decided that it would be prudent to leave the camera for other parts of the house.

Which one should you buy?

If you're new to the smart home world and you do not know which one to choose, we'll look to the Smart Clock. It can be argued that this bedside clock is smarter with Google Assistant, includes a larger screen and more powerful speakers.

Echo Spot is great if you already know the Alexa ecosystem and want a smart bedside clock. The inclusion of the camera is something you will face, but Amazon has done a good job of publishing something cute and smart at the same time.
