Lenovo's new 14-inch USB-C monitor is slim, lightweight and portable

Lenovo has created a portable USB-C monitor that could be a convenient way to add an extra screen to your laptop. We have seen a variety of portable monitors over the years, but most have been bulky and cumbersome. The big promise of USB-C for monitors seems finally to materialize, and the ThinkVision M14 of Lenovo seems to be a solid attempt. This is a 14 inch (1920 x 1080) IPS screen that weighs 1.5 kg and connects to a laptop via USB-C.

Unlike ZenScreens from Asus, Lenovo's portable USB-C monitor does not include a battery, which means your laptop, tablet, or even your phone is responsible for powering the screen. Lenovo does not provide an estimate of power consumption, but it should not be important for this type of display. Lenovo also offers an adapter for power support so you can charge and power the monitor simultaneously. I've had the opportunity to briefly try the ThinkVision M14 at Mobile World Congress this week and I was surprised by its weight and finesse.

Lenovo managed to make sure it was not bulky and that there was even a cover to protect the screen if you slipped it into a bag. There are two USB-C ports on each side, which makes it a little easier to position the cable, whether you want to use it on the left or right side of your laptop. Lenovo has integrated most of the components into the base, which has made me sound. There is even additional support at the base to increase the height of the monitor and align it with your laptop, which is an interesting additional option.

The only slightly disappointing aspect is the chin of the screen. I hope that Lenovo, HP and other computer manufacturers will move away from these display systems in favor of screens without a screen. This is a trend that is developing however. Nevertheless, these portable monitors are finally becoming a lightweight way to add an extra laptop screen when you're mobile. This is useful if you need more space, for example to edit photos or videos. Lenovo is now planning to offer the ThinkVision M14 at $ 249 this summer.
