On the first night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, Leon Bridges appeared to perform his single “Sweeter,” in honor of George Floyd and the countless other lives lost to racial profiling and police brutality.
Perched on a rooftop overlooking a metropolitan area, Bridges and his band performed the dismal song, as the singer established his hope for better functionality through the moving lyrics. “Hoping for a sweeter life, I’m just repeating a story,” he crooned. “Why am I scared with dark skin like night? I can’t feel peace with those judging eyes.”
The show came right after George Floyd’s brothers appeared to pay homage to their late brother and call for justice and peace. “It is up to us to continue the fight for justice – our actions will be their legacy,” said Philonise, Floyd’s brother. “We still have to find ourselves in what John Lewis called ‘good problems’.”
Bridges originally released the song after Floyd’s death and as the Black Lives Matter movement gathered momentum in the country in June. The singer said Billboard that he had written the song a year ago and was sad to see that it was still relevant. “It’s a lifelong story … but at the same time, I’m still optimistic because it’s amazing to see everyone coming together to fight for equality.”
