The next day Marcus Stroman left his start before the fifth inning due to the contraction of the hamstrings, the Mets called Chris Flexen, who could possibly slip into the rotation if Stroman is unable to make his next start.
To make room on the alignment of 25 men, Ruben Tejada was FDFA while the Mets returned to a bench of four men.
Flexen, whom the Mets had used earlier in the season after also using it as a starter, was working as a reliever with Triple-A Syracuse since June 12. But he returned to the rotation on August 10 – making two starts since then.
Speaking on Thursday, Stroman said he "looked forward to my departure on Tuesday, we would just need to progress in the progression."
Stroman added that he felt "a pretty strong cramping sensation, followed by some tightness" before getting out of the game, and that he was just safe in going out
"I'm going to start against the Cubs on Tuesday," he said.
After Stroman, Mickey Callaway, Mets manager, said Stroman was feeling good, but he was not ready to take him for his next start.
Flexen played 62 shots in 4.0 innings when he left on August 17th. It is therefore fair to believe that he can give 70 shots to the 75 Mets if he is called to take the start instead of Stroman.
The Mets also have the opportunity to use Flexen out of the market, where he had ups and downs with the Mets early in the year, but whose work has definitely turned in circles in the role.
It is also possible that the Mets simply ignore Stroman this turn in the rotation if he is not ready to leave – or if the Mets simply want to err on the side of caution and give him a little more time.
Stroman is scheduled for next Tuesday, August 27. But because of Monday's day off, the Mets have the opportunity to push all their other starters for a day instead of using a starter instead of Stroman.
