Less severe firearm restrictions come into effect in Texas after deadly mass shots

A series of new Texas laws that loosen firearms regulations came into effect Sunday after a month in which the state was the victim of several mass shootings.

The bills, which were passed during the 86th Texas Legislature, relax restrictions on access to firearms in school yards and churches, among other provisions.

Bill 1143 states that the Texas Education Code will be updated to "prevent school districts from regulating the manner in which the handgun, the weapon to fire or ammunition of a license holder are stored in their vehicle in the parking lot of a school ".

Meanwhile, Senate Bill 535 states that owners of licensed handguns will be allowed to carry guns in places of worship.

"We have learned time and time again that a gun-free zone does not exist, and those who have evil intentions will break the law and do their heinous deeds, regardless of the circumstances," said Senator Donna Campbell. co-author of the bill. said in a statement about CNN reported. "It makes no sense to disarm the gentiles and leave law-abiding citizens helpless when violent offenders break the law and do a lot of harm."

Another legislation eases restrictions on the number of armed school commissioners that a school district can name. Bill 2363 allows foster homes to store firearms and ammunition in a safe place. CNN notes that the House Bill 302 also prohibits homeowners or homeowners from preventing tenants from owning, carrying, transporting or storing a firearm on their property.

The National Rifle Association has praised this legislation, calling it "very successful," said KSAT 12, a local ABC affiliate, at ABC.

On Saturday, at least five people were killed after an alleged gunman opened fire in western Texas. Authorities said at least 21 people were injured, including three law enforcement officers.

A few weeks earlier, a shooting on a Walmart El Paso claimed the lives of 21 people.

Many Democratic lawmakers have called for reform of national firearms legislation.
