Levelland Police Chief Albert Garcia said police received a call in the early afternoon about a neighbor acting strangely and walking around with what appeared to be a large pistol.
Upon arrival, officers noticed a Chevrolet pickup truck in the driveway that was reported by a Texas highway patrol earlier in the day. The driver of the car at the time was driving recklessly and “seemed to be trying to prime” the soldier into some kind of confrontation, Garcia said.
Officers did not immediately approach the residence.
“Because we didn’t have a lot of information on whether this weapon was really a real weapon or not, we took precautions,” Garcia said.
“We started to try to get the negotiations started,” Garcia said. “We made contact with him, very briefly and briefly. He was very unfriendly. I didn’t want to visit or speak to the Levelland cops at the time.”
Within minutes of contact, the suspect opened the front door and began shooting at Levelland police, according to Garcia.
Lubbock County officers and his SWAT team responded to the scene to assist, police said.
“Shortly after, we had additional gunfire where we had wounded officers,” Garcia said.
The situation continues, according to the police. Several law enforcement agencies are on site.
“We appreciate the public’s support during this difficult time and ask for continued prayers for his family, both blood and blue,” the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office said, referring to Sgt. Bartlett, who was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead.
