His Mercedes team said the seven-time Formula 1 world champion was self-isolating and had only mild symptoms.

“He is otherwise fit and in good health and the whole team sends him their best wishes for a speedy recovery,” Mercedes said in a statement.

According to Mercedes, Hamilton was tested three times last week, including on the Bahrain international circuit on Sunday, where he won the Bahrain Grand Prix. It returned a negative result each time.

Will we ever see another Formula 1 champion like Lewis Hamilton?

The 35-year-old Briton woke up with mild symptoms on Monday morning and was told that a contact before his arrival in Bahrain had tested positive. He did another test and returned a positive result, which was confirmed by retesting.

Mercedes said a replacement driver for this weekend would be announced in due course. During the last weekend of November and the first of December, Bahrain hosts the third F1 double-header of the 2020 season.

Hamilton’s victory on Sunday earned him a record 95th victory of his career.

Hamilton’s Turkish Grand Prix victory last month saw F1’s most successful driver equal Michael Schumacher’s total of seven world titles.

Hamilton had 11 wins in 2020, which equates to his personal record for racing wins in an F1 season. Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel jointly hold the F1 record with 13 wins in one season and Hamilton’s withdrawal from the Sakhir GP means the Briton will not be able to reach that benchmark because after Sunday there will be only one race – the Abu Dhabi GP.

Mexican pilot Sergio Perez tested positive for coronavirus in July and Canadian Lance ride said he tested positive last month.
