It was confirmed yesterday that the W Series, a women’s racing competition, will feature as support races alongside the F1 races in 2021. The competition is an international single-seater car racing championship, held for female drivers.
Although the locations are not yet confirmed, the idea will be to organize eight races. The previous edition of the championship in 2019, had seen 20 drivers compete in six races.
One personality that is all for is Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. Speaking at the pre-race press conference, he stressed the need for diversity in motor racing.
Lewis Hamilton thinks the W series is “very, very important”
The British driver reportedly said: “If I’m really honest, I don’t know enough about it, I naturally grew up and moved up other ranks. I think it’s great what they have already done. And I think it’s really, really, really important that they’re here globally, on the stage.
Hamilton also feels that growing up in his karting ranks he only saw a handful of young girls pass by. And he hopes that with the W Series, the idea of making running a “male dominated” sport will change.

“I think when we talk about diversity, people often think we’re talking about having more people of color. It’s not just that, it’s involving more women.
“At the moment it’s a male dominated sport and that needs to change. Sport needs to do more, and that’s a good step in the right direction. Hamilton concludes.
W Series, an opportunity to promote more women pilots
Following the initial success of the 2019 Championship won by Jamie Chadwick, the 2021 season could receive even more attention. Formula 2, as support races alongside F1, also gained traction; and the same could happen with the W series.
Catherine Bond, CEO of Series W, said: “There is no doubt that now that the W Series is conducted alongside and in collaboration with Formula 1, our global reach, impact and influence will be greatly increased.
An interesting aspect of this series is that female drivers will also become eligible for an FIA Super License. Hopefully, then, this signals the start of a new chapter for more women to embark on a career in motorsport.
